UPGRADING GASKETS ON FIRST GEN CHEVY SMALL BLOCK
#1
Not quite a 383, piston are only .020 over.AFR 195 heads Fel pro 1003 head gasket Fel pro 1205 intake gasket Felpro 1404 exhaust gasket.By now everybody knows i am a Fel Pro fan.Would like to keep it that way.500 hp plus 150 shot nos.Presently loosing coolant and leaking compression in radiator. When it gets torn down would like to go back up with MLS head gasket ,permadry plus intake gasket and the best upgrade for the 1404 exhaust gasket. The heads and block will be machine to the desired RA of 60 or smoother.Would like head gasket to compensate for thickness lose. Really would appreciate it if you guys can provide appropriate part numbers to get the job done.

Hi,

Glad to hear you're a fan of our gaskets!

For the head gaskets, 1143 would be a great option since the sealing surfaces are compatible with MLS gaskets. 1143 has the same thickness (.041") as the 1003 gaskets (though the composite 1003 gaskets generally compress by .004"-.006" when torqued whereas the MLS gaskets don't really compress) and nearly the same bore size at 4.165" vs the 1003's 4.166" bore size.

If you need a thicker gasket to compensate for machining you'll have to jump up to the 1144 (4.200" bore) Performance MLS gasket family. 1144-053 is .053" thick with a 4.200" bore.

We do not offer PermaDryPlus metal carrier/molded rubber intake gaskets for early SBC applications. If the 1205 intake gaskets have the correct bolt hole and port layout, you can continue to use them as they easy to port match. If a more durable gasket is desired, 1205 S-3 has a steel core which makes it more durable but harder to port match.

1404 is the highest performance exhaust gasket we offer for the SBC at this time, so thick with them if they offer the correct port size and layout.

You can see all of the gaskets we offer, along with pictures, specifications, and more information by selecting your application here:

Thank you for your speedy reply. After head and block are machine for MLS gasket. Will decide on exact thickness of gasket required to maintain current compression ratio. So far the 1404 is a go for the exhaust and the 1205 S-3 for the intake .

You're welcome, good luck with your project!
