Head Bolts ES72220 or ES72390
#1
I am changing out the heads on my 1999 6.0 LM4. It is stock with the cast iron square port heads, and I am putting a set of 2007 aluminum 799 heads on it. In trying to get all the parts on hand before I tear into it, I am having an issue figuring out which head bolts I will need. I am searching under 2007 because that is the year of heads, and it is giving me two options, ES72220 and ES72390. I can not find what the difference is between these two bolt sets at all to figure out which ones I need.

Hi Jon,

This depends on a lot of factors. The head bolts will need to be the correct length and correct pitch to thread into the block.

The ES 72220 bolt set has 10x 11mm thread x 2.0 pitch x 100mm long bolts and 5x 8mm thread x 1.25 pitch x 45mm long bolts.

The ES 72390 bolt set has 10x 11mm thread x 1.5 pitch x 100mm long bolts and 5x 8mm thread x 1.25 pitch x 45mm long bolts.

The thread lengths are different between the sets as well. You can get specs on Fel-Pro head bolts by looking them up in our electronic catalog at www.fme-cat.com

We do not have any way to interchange head bolts for applications they are not listed for, but you may need to research the head bolts that match the block as well. A quick search for "799 heads LM4 block" turned up a lot of results on the LS forums. You may want to check to see what head fasteners others who have done the swap have used.

Thank you for the reply, here is what I was able to dig up.

2004 and earlier LQ4/LQ9 blocks had long and short bolts while the 2005 and up had one length. You gotta make sure you get the right bolts for the year of your block. In this respect, it really doesn't matter what head you use, it's the block that determines which bolt set to buy.

Actually they switched mid year 04, some have the same length bolts, some have the short/long combo.......I've had two 04 block and one had the early pattern, one had the late pattern.

Jon,

You're welcome! So it seems the LM4 is the aluminum block 5.3L used in 03-04, while the LQ4 is the iron block 6.0L used from 99-08 (VIN code U). So assuming you have a 1999 iron 6.0L, you may want to look at ES 72173 as well, as that set would be the head bolts associated with that block. Make sure you use the correct length bolt in the correct position!
