Hi,

The torque spec of 4.5-5.9 ft-lbs listed in the repair manual should be followed. You will need an inch-lb torque wrench to accurately torque the bolts for the valve cover - we do not recommend trying to use a ft-lb torque wrench at specs this low. To convert the ft-lb specs to in-lb, simply multiply the spec by 12 - 4.5*12=54 in-lb - 5.9*12=70.8 in-lb.

Fel-Pro gaskets are designed to be installed using the OE torque specs unless otherwise noted by an instruction sheet that would only be included if the specs were different. This is because the information and procedures in the repair manual are copyright-protected, so we are not able to reprint them. We strongly recommend using the latest edition of the repair manual for your application to ensure you have the correct torque specifications, sequence, and other procedures to ensure a reliable repair. Printed manuals can be purchased at your local auto parts stores or online. Electronic access to repair information can be purchased through a website such as AllDataDIY.com

If you do not wish to purchase a manual, you can check with your local library as they may have a copy available.

Hi Tommy,

The torque spec of 89 in-lbs listed in the repair manual for the valve covers should be followed. You will need an inch-lb torque wrench to accurately torque the bolts for the valve cover. The rear differential cover bolts appear to have a spec of 33 ft-lbs, however there are multiple differential options. We recommend confirming the proper spec with the latest edition of the repair manual.

78 Olds Cutlass 4.3l V8, there is no torque spec i can find. Tightened pretty well and i'm still getting weeping along the bottom. Can i use gasket sealant and affix it to the valve cover first instead of the head?

Hi,

We would suggest removing the covers make sure that they are straight. These sheet metal covers can get pretty twisted and not apply the proper load to the gaskets. Make the bolt hole areas flat, they tend to bow down towards the heads from tightening, especially if the bolts are tightened beyond the OE specification.

In this case, you can use an adhesive to "glue" the gaskets to the cover or the heads, but it is usually better attaching them to the covers because of the lip on the covers. If you put the gaskets on the heads, you wouldn't know if the gasket extends outside the lip of the valve cover. Do not use RTV to hold the gaskets to the covers - use a few dabs of brush tack or weatherstrip adhesive. Don't overdo it - use only enough to hold the gaskets in place on the covers, the adhesive is only there to hold the gaskets in place, not for sealing.

The torque spec is 84 in. lbs. Start in the center & work your way out.

Without knowing which engine is in your bronco, we can't say for sure, but it is likely to be 60 in-lbs or less. All Fel-Pro gaskets are designed to be installed exactly as described in the repair manual for the application unless otherwise noted by a Fel-Pro FIT Form that would be included with the gasket set (many gaskets sets do not contain fit forms because they are to be installed exactly as directed by the repair manual).

We only provide instructions in our gasket sets when the installation procedure differs from the repair manual procedure or when special information regarding the gasket(s) is needed. This is because the information and procedures in the repair manual are copyright-protected, so we are not able to reprint them. We strongly recommend using the latest edition of the repair manual for your application to ensure you have the correct torque specifications, sequence, and other procedures.
